Jessica Nguyen took first place in the PAST&E “Mackenzie River” Summer Slam Tournament at St. Johns Racquet Center on Saturday, June 23. Nguyen beat Hayley Cottrell in the 18 & Under division 6-3, 6-3. Farida Abdelmoneum beat Natisha Ortiz to take the 12 & Under division title, while Maria Quisling bested Gemma Tkel to claim the 10 & Under title.
The PAST&E Summer Slam Tournament Series is open to all novice-level children from ages six to 18. The goal of these tournaments is to make tennis accessible for all kids by making entry fees affordable. The cost to enter is just ten dollars, making these the best prices for tournaments in all of Portland. The theme for this tournament series is a journey through the great rivers of the world, including the Mississippi (July 29-July 1) and the Amazon (July 6-8). The tournament series consists of rookie level competition which promotes the idea of “fun” on the tennis court.
